Mohawks and the Hurons

Glynn ManyironsWhen the winter winds blew and the heavy snow fell, the Elders gathered the young ones around the fires in the long houses, telling them stories that were passed down from generation to generation from the distant past. Every story had a teaching in it, and at the end the young ones were asked to find the teaching in it.Top photo 2

The Mohawks and the Hurons were traditional for hundreds and hundreds of years.

So the Huron war parties were sent out time after time, against the Mohawks and were defeated every time. So this time the Hurons decided to send their strongest warriors on a war party against the Mohawks to defeat them.

photoOn the trail in the forest they came across a clearing, in the middle of the clearing there was a hill, and on the top of the hill there was a Mohawk warrior on horse back.

The Chief of the Hurons said to ten of his best warriors:” You go and get that Mohawk”. and away they went.

There was a lot of noise, then nothing. The Hurons waited for days, then the Chief Of the Hurons said; “look the Mohawk is back on the hill again, twenty five go and get him”. Away his warriors went to get him, there was a lot of noise, then nothing. The Hurons waited for a long time, finally the Huron Chief got tired of waiting and said ” a hundred of you go and when the Mohawk shows up on the hill, then attack and get him.” The Huron warriors, all hundred of them took off at a run, confident that they would get the Mohawk this time. There was plenty of noise then hush, nothing at all. After days of waiting finally a Huron warrior came out of the forest, crawling on his hands and knees, and wounded.End photo

The Huron Chief said to him:” What happened to you and where are the others?”The Huron warrior answered:”Oh my Chief, we were defeated, the Mohawks did not play fair, they were cheating, THERE WERE TWO OF THEM.”

I work with Muskwa International Foundation Inc. which is an entity that was formed to assist the street children in the Philippines, mostly in Manila and Davao, the two largest cities in the Philippines.  You can find out about their projects here Street Children and Natural Disasters.

The stories I tell here I learned from the Elders and Story tellers and I am passing them on with their blessings. These stories can be anything from 4,000 to 5,000 years old.
