False Face and Crooked Nose Healer

Glynn ManyironsIroquois/ Cayuga/ Seneca Story

After the Creator finished his work on Mother Earth, creating all the Standing People (Trees and Grass), the Swimming People (Fish), the Crawling People (Snakes), the Flying People (Birds), the Four Legged People (all Animals) and the Two Legged People (all Human beings), He was sitting on his rainbow and admiring his work.

But after a while he was getting tired of sitting there, with nothing to do. So he decided to go down to Mother Earth and see how things were working out. In order that no one would know who he was, he put on a human form, and away he went.

False face 2As he was walking on a trail in the forest he saw an ugly Creature coming towards him, the Creator said to himself, : “Hmmmm, I wonder what that thing is. This Creature has a big head, with bushy hair, an ugly face, a big nose, a bent back and bent legs. I did not create such an ugly thing.”

So the Creator said to the Creature: “Who are you, and where did you come from?” And the Creature replied: “I am the Creator”.

The Creator said: “No you are not, I am”. The Creature said: ” No you are not, I am the Creator, Besides I was here before you.”

This argument went on for a long time, until the Creator said to the Creature :”Lets have a contest, if I win I am the Creator, if you win then you are. But if I win you will have to leave Mother Earth.”

The Creature said: “You are on”.

The Creator said: ” See that big boulder there? If you can move it without touching it you win, if I move it I win.”

SFalse face 1o the Creature tried very hard and finally the boulder rocked back and forth. The Creature said: “See I moved it, I win”.

The Creator said: “No no no, it’s my turn now. Turn your back and I will see if I can move the boulder.”

The Creature said: “Okay, but no cheating.”

The Creator said: ” Do not worry, I am not a cheater”.

The Creator tried very hard and finally he moved the boulder, and said to the Creature; “You can turn around now”.

The Creature turned around and hit his face on the boulder and broke his nose.

The Creator said to him, “I win, you pack your things and leave Mother Earth as we agreed.”

The Creature begged the Creator to let him stay on Earth because he loved the Humans here, and asked to be allowed to be their healer.

In the end the Creator agreed to it.

I work with Muskwa International Foundation Inc. which is an entity that was formed to assist the street children in the Philippines, mostly in Manila and Davao, the two largest cities in the Philippines.  You can find out about their projects here Street Children and Natural Disasters.

The stories I tell here I learned from the Elders and Story tellers and I am passing them on with their blessings. These stories can be anything from 4,000 to 5,000 years old.
