Creation Story (Salish Nation)

Glynn ManyironsThe ancients all had greater powers and cunning than either animals or people.

Beside the ancients, real people lived on Mother Earth at that time.

The Old One made the people out of the last balls of mud He took from Mother Earth.

Those people were so ignorant that they were the most helpless of all the creatures the Old One had made.

The problem with the early world was that the ancients were selfish, and they were also very stupid and  ignorant in many ways. They did not know which creatures were deer and which were people, and because of that, sometimes they would eat people instead of deer.

At last the Old One said: “There will soon be no people left on Mother Earth if I don’t put a stop to this stupidity.”

So he sent the Coyote to teach the Indians how to do things.

The Coyote went traveling all over Mother Earth, teaching the Indians, making life a lot easier and better for them, and they learned from the Coyote how to make many great and wonderful things.

I work with Muskwa International Foundation Inc. which is an entity that was formed to assist the street children in the Philippines, mostly in Manila and Davao, the two largest cities in the Philippines.  You can find out about their projects here Street Children and Natural Disasters.

The stories I tell here I learned from the Elders and Story tellers and I am passing them on with their blessings. These stories can be anything from 4,000 to 5,000 years old.
