Creation Story (Penobscot Nation)
At the time Kloshkurbe, the Maker of all (also known as the Creator), lived on Mother Earth, there were no people living here yet. But as time passed, a young Warrior appeared. He was made of the foam of the waters of the rivers and lakes, and after a while he became Kloshkurbe’s chief helper.
Kloshkurbe, with the help of the young Warrior created many wonderful things. After a
while there appeared to them a beautiful young maiden. She was born of the wonderful earth plant, and of the dew, and of the warmth of Mother Earth.
The Maiden was called First Mother. As time passed by she married the chief helper of Kloshkurbe. Their children multiplied so fast that soon there was not enough game, fish and plants to feed them.
The First Mother asked her husband to kill her, which he did. After that he and their children dragged her body back and forth across the barren land. as she had asked them to do so.They buried her bones in the middle of that land.
Nine months later, they returned and found the land green with ripe corn, squash and beans and the middle of the land was full of Sacred Tobacco plants. There was also plenty of fish in the rivers close by, and plenty of game all around.
I work with Muskwa International Foundation Inc. which is an entity that was formed to assist the street children in the Philippines, mostly in Manila and Davao, the two largest cities in the Philippines. You can find out about their projects here Street Children and Natural Disasters.
The stories I tell here I learned from the Elders and Story tellers and I am passing them on with their blessings. These stories can be anything from 4,000 to 5,000 years old.
