In 2012, The Medical School at Wisconsin University published findings of a research that took 8 years to complete. These findings overruled previous understandings regarding the health related effects of beliefs.
At the beginning of the research 30,000 adults were asked 2 questions:
- How much stress did you experience this past year?
- Do you believe that stress is harmful for your health?
After tracking the participants for 8 years, premature death statistics were examined in relation to the belief that stress is harmful to health.
The most amazing finding was that people who experienced high stress levels, but didn’t believe that stress is harmful to health, had the lowest risk of dying of any one in the study, including people who experienced low levels of stress.
The researchers estimated that during the 8 years of the study,182,000 people died prematurely – not due to stress, but due to the belief that stress is harmful for your health. That is more than 20,000 people a year!
Assuming that the statistics are correct, the belief that stress is harmful for your health becomes the #15 cause of death, preceding skin cancer, Aids and murder!
In a different study, conducted at The Department of Physiology at Harvard University, researchers proved that people who believed that stress was good for your health did not experience common physiological changes associated with stress, such as the contraction of blood vessels, even if they experienced high levels of stress.
Despite these findings, most people still don’t take the effect of their beliefs seriously enough and don’t address beliefs when they get sick. The reason for this being limiting beliefs regarding the role belief plays in disease, and regarding mental and emotional healing.
Following are the 10 most common limiting health-related beliefs.
- In physical disease, healing of beliefs and emotions is optional – it’s not a crucial factor in recovery.
Modifying limiting beliefs and resolving emotional conflict considerably strengthen the effectiveness of medical protocols, and in some cases considerably reduces the need for chemical medications and other medical procedures.
For example: Riki who was unresponsive to chemotherapy until she started resolving the emotional issues associated with her breast cancer.
- Addressing beliefs and emotions has a general calming affect but doesn’t directly affect what’s going on in the body.
“General calming affect” is a description associated with certain massage therapies, good music or a glass of wine. Healing beliefs changes the way you perceive yourself and your world and the way you deal with emotionally charged situations. This directly affects physiological processes by changing the body’s inner environment.
For example: Toni who came to me with acute hemorrhoids and scheduled for surgery in a few weeks. Changing and healing his beliefs and negative emotions saved him a painful post-operation recovery. Since then, the hemorrhoids never returned.
- Healing beliefs and emotions is lengthy and costly.
The length of the process is determined by the degree of dedication to the healing process and how one deals with challenges to their comfort zones. The more dedicated you are, changes will become apparent faster.
The belief that mental and emotional healing is lengthy draws its inspiration from psychological treatments which can take years. There is no connection between the psychological and holistic model.
Costly is a relative term. Healing beliefs and resolving emotional conflict is one of the most worthwhile investments you can make in yourself in terms of return on investment. Saving on medical procedures, chemical medication and physical and emotional suffering is many times no less than astonishing.
- My health issues are “Real” – they have nothing to do with beliefs or emotions.
Scientific research proves neurological and biochemical connections between thought, emotions and the body. Any and every physical condition has mental and emotional components. They may not be the ONLY components but they are very significant ones.
- My health issues are out of my control – I don’t believe that I can affect what’s going on in my body.
True – there is a certain percentage of health conditions that are out of our control and influence, such as genetic conditions, congenital deformations and irreversible anatomical damage. The percentage of conditions we can influence is much greater than the number of cases where we have no influence.
If you don’t know how to influence what’s going on in your body – that is something you can learn how to do. Healing beliefs and emotions should include healthy self-management skills so that when you complete the process you know how to manage your life more resourcefully.
- The healing process should “fix” my health challenges for me.
This belief draws its inspiration from the doctor-patient model where patients turn over full responsibility for solving health issues to the doctor. In the holistic model of healing, patients are and must always be an active integral part of the process. Practitioners don’t “fix” anything for anybody. The practitioner encourages the body to re-balance itself and teaches healthy self-management skills so you can manage your life more resourcefully. Your job is to apply the tools you learn.
- Healing can only be done face to face with the practitioner.
The belief that significant healing can only be done face to face is common in people who did not grow up in the internet era, with so many available advanced communication technologies.
I personally have conducted successful healing processes with people from all over the world using online technologies. This belief only reflects the limitation of your current beliefs but has absolutely no type of objective or factual base.
- Significant healing requires “time-out” from daily routines such as work, raising children and household chores.
Beliefs and emotions affect our lives all the time. Healthy self-management should be a part of your life – not separate from it. In addition, learning how to manage your inner world more resourcefully considerably helps you to deal with your daily loads and stresses.
- I have a lot of knowledge and self-management tools that I fail to apply – there is no point in me starting a healing process.
Many times difficulties and failure to apply the tools you have are a result of limiting beliefs. As soon as you identify and modify the application inhibiting beliefs – these difficulties fall away.
- If my doctor doesn’t recommend healing of beliefs and emotions – it must be ineffective.
Many doctors are not familiar enough with non conventional healing methods therefore they justifiably cannot recommend them. Due to legal implications, it’s easier for them to object to non conventional healing methods rather than risk recommending something they don’t know enough about. This is not an indication of these method’s effectiveness, but rather an indication of your doctor’s familiarity with these methods.
If you are suffering from a health condition or any other type of life challenge – do yourself a favor and explore your beliefs and emotions. Internal healing can be done in conjunction with medical treatment and in most cases enhances its effectiveness. Believe me – you will thank me for this advice!
