If You Want to Heal the World, Heal Yourself
” If you want to heal the world, heal yourself.” Juan Nunez Del Prado, Andean spiritual teacher.
I thought this was a nice cliche when I first heard it- but after years of working with clients and students, I had a dawning of insight, much like castenada ( not comparing myself lol:)… when he also realised some of what he perceived as the trivial teachings.. were the most solid, true and powerful lessons! It changed the fabric of everything he had previously learned, putting it into a new perspective!
When we heal ourselves, it changes our vibrations, and impacts those around us tremendously. We cease to engage from a place of wound, and begin to engage from a different place. First, this serves to not-contribute to making the problem/s worse. Secondly, it creates a model for others to follow. An alternative response mechanism works its way into the common pool. We may never see or realise that others watch or witness HOW we choose to react or respond.. but they do. Especially children:)
This is one thing I learned from working with horses. One day I noted, that every time a person handles a horse, they are either training or untraining it, to do something. Better behaviour, bad behaviour, etc. Either “punishing” them without their understanding, or improperly, and/or “rewarding” undesired behaviours. Every action and reaction was either creating a better, more cooperative relationship, or dissolving harmony, to replace it with a lack of partnership and cooperation. Everyone, to varying degrees, then is an unintended trainer: both in and out of the saddle.
From this it was a small step to understand that this is equally true with all of our human relationships. Every time we interact, it is a lesson to the other person/s about acceptable rules and mores.
So I have learned that integrity and awareness are the two keys to changing those paradigms. And it all stems from that one adage. Be aware of our actions and choices. Contrary to what we may perceive, for every encounter, there are A,B, C, D and E- none of the above, possible solutions. By learning to be aware, we learn what our default responses are. Most times, we don’t even realise we have defaulted to a habituated course of action. When we do become aware of this, we can create and choose alternatives.
This is the integrity part. Once we realise how often we “choose,”.. we can begin to consciously select our responses. This way, we consciously and conscientiously respond, rather than react. From there, it is amazing how much we notice about the WAY we live our lives. And we begin to live just a little bit differently. Did I really need to get angry over that? Probably not. Wow, I just saved a lot of energy, mine, and aggravation. Energy that can be redirected into things that serve ME better, and compassion for the person at the other end of each transaction. In this way, we can truly heal the world.
I am an Education Specialist, Health Coach and Author. I work with aspects of the teachings I have learned from Andean shamanic and cosmology, to health, nutrition and education. Everything is energy. Energy must flow. Like water, when it does not flow, it stagnates and is not healthy. These techniques help your life to flow. I have been initiated into many of the ancient lineages and learned ceremonies, rites of passage and healing techniques. I have worked as a healer and done workshops and taught some of these aspects – passing the teachings on.
