Gastrointestinal Health Plan

Ann PeckhamMost of us take our digestive systems for granted. If it is working properly, we don’t even think about it. The truth is our digestive systems are always working hard to keep us alive and functioning. The GI tract never sleeps or stops to take a break, and we never have to put any conscious effort into keeping it going. We can eat onion bhajis, sponge cake, and cheese sandwiches and our GI systems somehow manage to extract something out of them that the body can use to keep on going.

Proper digestion is vital to our survival. Digestion is the process by which the foods that we consume are broken down into useful nutrients and waste to be eliminated. Without proper digestive processes, nutrients will not be available and toxic waste products will not be eliminated.

The digestive process relies on enzymes and probiotic bacteria that are vital to the chemical reactions we rely on to remain healthy. Without them we will suffer from constipation, arthritis, gastritis, allergies, yeast infections, obesity, acne, and body odour. Over acidity will also contribute to hiatal hernia and the use of antacids that will further decrease effectiveness.

Most people mix many foods in one meal (meat, potatoes, sugary drinks and dessert). Unfortunately our bodies are not built by nature to handle this, so this leads to undigested foods that may putrefy and cause decomposing food waste to poison the bloodstream. If you have been relying on an antacid to treat the symptoms of poor digestion (Gaviscon is one example), they have dangerous side effects. They suppress the production of gastric juices for hours at a time, interfering with digestion. Ultimately, the diseases caused by toxic undigested food far exceed the discomfort of gas.

The beginning of the digestive process begins in the mouth where the food is broken down by the saliva. Unfortunately, most people nowadays gobble their food rather than chewing each mouthful 30 times, which is what we were taught to do when I was young. This sends foods that have not been properly broken down into the stomach.

The stomach has a volume of less than half a cup, and as you eat it stretches to hold about 3 pints of food and liquids. About every 20 seconds it churns the contents mixing it with hydrochloric acid and pepsin to break it down. Most adults have depleted hydrochloric acid in their stomachs. You may have noticed, if you have been sick as an adult (i.e. thrown up), that it doesn’t burn your throat as it used to. This is a strong indication that you have a weakened and depleted capacity to digest your food thoroughly.

Once your food leaves the stomach it enters the small intestine which has a lining that contains a vast population of immune cells that identify less tolerable foods. Depending on the tolerability of the foods you have eaten, the small intestines might do one of three things.

  1. Cause you to immediately vomit up the offending stuff.
  2. Cause bloating, cramping or other discomforts known as indigestion.
  3. Cause a paralysis of the small intestinal wall to allow your meal to pass rapidly out of your body mixed with plenty of water, a condition known as diarrhoea.

Optimal health requires that we pull away from dependency on over the counter drugs and prescriptions, and trust in the power of nature to heal us in all but the most extreme of circumstances.

The majority of pharmaceutical companies’ most profitable products do little more than introduce more toxicity into our systems, in addition to causing often unacceptable or even life threatening side effects – often conveniently requiring another drug to counteract the side effects of the first one.

Open any magazine or newspaper or turn on the television and within a short time you will see advertising for the latest cure all drug. They make these advertisements so appealing, showing attractive people frolicking through grassy fields (despite their hay fever!), being athletic (despite their arthritis), or bounding around happily (despite their upset stomach). They portray so much loveliness that you might be tempted to ignore the fine print about the drugs’ side effects and risks.

“There must be an alternative” do I hear you cry? Well if you depend on the media to tell you about it you will be waiting a long time, or worse than that misled.

The problem with prescriptions is that they control the symptoms without healing the person. All too often they cause problems themselves.

Consumers are becoming more suspicious about the drugs that are being pushed on them. Drug makers have been caught manipulating study data and buying off research teams to ensure that they get the results they have paid for.

So what are the natural solutions?

With the typical Western diet constipation and sluggish elimination are extremely common. Adding Chlorella as a supplement normalises an underactive intestinal tract in three ways.

  1. By enhancing the natural contractions of the intestinal wall.
  2. By supplying cellulose, a form of indigestible fibre.
  3. By promoting rapid growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut.

Chlorella has existed on Earth since the pre-Cambrian period, which means that it has been on the planet for over two billion years. Chlorella is 50 percent protein, 20 percent fat and 20 percent carbohydrate, it also contains many minerals, vitamins and a unique array of phyto complexes. There are so many beneficial aspects to Chlorella that I will be returning to it throughout the series of articles you will receive.
