Born in the rich culture of South India and educated in English, I have been exposed to two opposing world views enabling me to achieve synergy and realize true harmony.

I belong to linguistic community “Saurashtra” who were silk weavers patronised by kings of yore. Our ancestors are said to have migrated from Western part of India to Tamil Nadu in the South several centuries ago.

Growing up in the country as India underwent its pangs of Westernisation, I was able to synthesise the self oriented Western perspective with the community oriented native one to arrive at a wholesome concept of self after considerable efforts and experimentation. My forthcoming book “Searching for Self – In Pursuit of Inner Peace” is the culmination of this labour.

Don’t Beg for Bailouts

Recessions are part of economic cycles that inevitably follow periods of growth. Though recessions appear frequently, only some of them are severe. Whenever severe recessions occur, weak and leveraged businesses collapse. This causes economic turmoil that ripples through the country and the whole world in these times of globalised commerce. Supply chains collapse and large…

Don’t Bailout Businesses

Recessions such as the present one caused by the pandemic affect both individuals and businesses, with the former losing jobs and income and facing hunger and uncertainty while the latter teeter at the edge of collapse and bankruptcy. And then the governments step in. In the earlier times governments rushed to the aid of larger…

Artificial Intelligence – Will the Machines Take Over?

There have been tremendous advances in the realms of machine learning and artificial intelligence and there are serious apprehensions about job losses and machine domination. What’s happening now does have a parallel to what happened to physical labor when mechanical workers invaded in the early Twentieth Century. To get an idea about how artificial intelligence…

Reforming Democracy

The problems faced by every democratic country in the world are almost identical. They originate in the way democracy is implemented rather than from democracy itself. All these problems can be greatly mitigated if we have the political will and vision to reform democracy. The reformation must start at the grass root level and leverage…

Representative Democracy is an Anachronism

Governance by representation is popularly considered the best way to rule through public mandate. Direct democracy where the citizens will vote on major issues directly is also gaining popularity in the recent times. However democracy is unduly dependent upon voting on decisions which has several major drawbacks. The decisions are restricted to yes or no….

Purpose and Passion

Our Purpose What is the true purpose of our life, we wonder. Is it to achieve greatness or amass wealth? Is it to excel in some field or serve the masses? Is to live a life of pleasure and indulgence? For almost all of us, years or even decades of searching for our true purpose…

Our True Purpose

We are all in search of the true purpose of our lives. A few do find it and if it is indeed their true purpose live a life of contentment thereafter. But many who find a purpose which they think is the real one subsequently discover that is not the case. Their contentment and peace…

Finding Peace

When we find ourselves agitated, we attempt to find peace somewhere or to make peace with our tormentors. But in the active and ever-changing world today, we lose our peace almost as soon as we manage to find it. And there is no dearth of our tormentors. This appears like a zero-sum game where whatever…

What Can I Do Now?

We are going through turbulent times that have taken us far from our familiar territory. We are restricted to our homes and a lot of our freedoms have been curtailed. We cannot travel to the next town not to mention going out of our country. We cannot shop in the mall, go to a movie…

Stimulating the Economy

Power Play When we interact with another person, we are always conscious of the power balance between us. We feel powerful in the presence of some people while less powerful or even powerless in the presence of others. Our actions are profoundly influenced by this power perception in every interaction. We try to impose our…

What Did We Do to Deserve This?

The pandemic ravaging humans today is unprecedented in its spread. Almost everyone everywhere has had their life disrupted in some manner. More than half the population is under lockdown – forcibly prevented from leaving our homes for longer periods. Thus incarcerated, we are now wondering what we did to deserve these shackles! Thoughts, Emotions &…
