There are Different Types of Pain

John OsbornePain comes in many shades – but which is which?

Some years ago, when I was a gymnast, young and fit, I was lucky enough to be chosen to trial for what then was the UK Olympic Gym Team. At the time there was no such thing as “sponsorship” or money of any sort available to fund individuals, so either you were already in the Armed Forces or were prepared to join if you were selected. I was at a private school where the gym instructors were ex-Army types, tough, kind and devoted to their art. It was a real pleasure working with them. Although I was in the School Gym Team I needed to improve quite a bit to achieve the levels required. Training was hard and long and really primitive by todays standards. But I loved it. Until, one day perhaps tired or careless, I failed to put enough chalk on my hands, went up on the high bar  and, doing grand circles, managed to rip the skin off the palm of one of my hands. The burning pain shot up my arm. Needless to say I let go of the bar. With no safety harness – that was for wimps – I flew through the air with the greatest of ease, just like the man on the flying trapeze – and hit the wall bars about 4 metres away, my back flat against them, my head likewise, to fall floorwards, unconscious.

When I came round in the in the recovery room of the gym – no calling an ambulance for toughies like us – my hand had been dressed and anaesthetised, I had been checked for broken bones and was “invited to walk about a bit”. After a few minutes of that, I was then “invited” to go back up on the bar, which I did. A gentle work out for just a few minutes showed no ill effects except severe muscle pain, before stopping and being told to keep moving and apply the ointment, almost certainly something like Sloane’s Linament for horses, before going to bed.

Needless to say that was the end of my Olympic hopes. But it was also the beginning of a life of pain. Unbeknown to me at the time a small bone in my lower back/hip region had dislocated to become the source of breathtaking discomfort. And the worst of it is that I never know when it strikes. It just comes, more often than not if I bend forwards or sit in a low chair – a low car is the worst. No effort required!

I tell you this because this one problem causes various types of pain. Anti-inflammatories, either chemical or natural, have no remedial effect. The bone moves, traps a nerve and, bingo, the burning pain arrives. And only a good chiropractor can resolve it – until the next time. But this one problem has different sorts of pain, too. While the site of dislocation burns, the leg below it has a similar fate. But the head just aches, the chest tightens so that breathing is difficult. and if I put a foot wrong, literally, the knifelike pain that runs from my hip to my toes can make me fall down!

Compare this little compendium of different discomforts with arthritic, period, or other inflammatory pains, which can mostly be resolved with Serrapeptase; they are another whole list! Here, in this one example, we find that the standard medical practice of “a prescription for aspirin” or similar NSAID is almost certainly a long way from the right solution. With the many different natural remedies available, an experienced natural remedy practitioner has the ability to advise on the ways and means of a solution. An acupuncturist, chiropractor, Traditional Chinese Medicine are but three to add to the well established route which I practice. And one or other can surely help.

NSAID’s are in the main one of the last things required. It is a little understanding of the body and some TLC.
