The Universe is Within Us

Julia ChiI was driving yesterday over the Ashdown forest… The forest where Pooh bear, Piglet and all their friends live.

It was a forest I almost lived in too for many years…
Most days I would run there, loving its expansive wildness and it’s freedom.
It reflected my yearning, for wildness and freedom; no restraints within me, the never ending pathways were a part of me too, i knew they were inside me, and that by following these trails I was finding my way back to me…

As I drove in my car on the road between this vast expanse of land yesterday, the sun was setting and the forest was breathtaking in its beauty…

As my journey from Sussex to London continued, I turned onto the A21 and suddenly before me was a sunset that filled my soul….

But like everything, I understood that if the outer realms are igniting a reaction or response within me, whether that be an intake of breath, an expansion of my heart, then I know that this is because I have not yet embraced this fully within me…

This scene of beauty on the outside is a reflection of me – it is me, it is all of us – and in knowing this we can open to reclaim and know ourselves more fully.

I am the Ashdown forest in all its wildness, I am the sunset in all its inspiring orange and black power…

All that is outside us is a reflection of what is within…
“As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul…” Hermes Trismegistus

We are the sunset, the forest, the ocean, the stream that runs through the Rocky Mountains… We are the mountains also…

The whole universe is within us and when we truly know this, we also know that we do not need to be anywhere to attain a state of wonder or joy, because it is within us always.
We need only be where we are…
We need only be here…
There is nowhere else to go.

I have been running all of my life – it feels I was born to run. In the running step I experienced freedom and my true expression. I came to see that I needed to ‘get out of the way of myself’ and let my energy flow through the running step; allow it to express itself in the dance and the motion of running.  I ran for England and GB for some years. My first international was in 1979, a three mile cross country race; and I continued to run at international level until 1993. Two of my best results were first place in the Dublin City Marathon in 1985 and 7th place woman, 3rd British woman in the 1986 London Marathon in a time of 2.36.31, which gained me selection for the Commonwealth Games.
