The Power of Choice

Sue EllamI am certain that I’m not the only one who feels that their power of choice is being chipped away at day by day. Choice is a human right – we should be able to decide for ourselves how we want to live our lifespan on this earth – I’m sure it wasn’t in the divine plan that we be born to be enslaved and manipulated by others. However, from all the information that comes my way through various sources, it seems pretty clear that the majority of people are living lives in servitude to the choices and decisions of others – their own power having been stripped away.

Something that has happened to me over the past week has highlighted this topic for me. I have been interviewing both the authors and advertisers on the Soulfully Connecting website (link to interviews) – it has been wonderful getting to know them better in this way. One day last week I had two interviews scheduled – the first one was going wonderfully when my laptop started to overheat and shut down on me, mid interview. The second interview I had to cut short, and indeed my laptop died only a few minutes after we wrapped it up.

On investigation, it transpires that an upgrade that I had decided against (due to other people having had major problems with it) had gone ahead anyway – even though the files had previously been uninstalled, they were now reinstalled and just waiting for activation. This company had made the decision for me and decided that my choice was irrelevant, so had overridden it without my knowledge or consent – the result was my not being able to do my job properly and inconvenience and waste of time for both my interviewees and myself. In my book, that is treating customers with the height of disrespect – as though we were children that didn’t know what was best for us!

In the grand scheme of things, this is a minor infringement of human rights, but it is endemic of life on this planet. The few making decisions for the many!

This is less about what we believe, but more about how accurate the information is that we base our beliefs on. We often think we have a choice, but by being fed inaccurate information by people with a vested interest in the outcome, aren’t our choices being made for us by default?

Making an active and authentic choice these days has to be backed by determination, diligence, an increasing amount of research and a fair amount of courage. It’s not easy having views that vary from the ‘norm’ – there is a lot of money and power expended on attempting to bring everyone to the same viewpoint – that which benefits the instigator. Life can be made very unpleasant indeed for those who buck the system!

Despite all this, I am optimistic because we have control of the ultimate power, if we just tapped into it – the power of ourselves. We have power over our own minds and emotions – nobody can access our thoughts and feelings without our permission. We have the ability to keep our thoughts and beliefs private and personal. That is the beginning of the road to ultimate power – the destination is detachment and lack of fear – to be a person who is motivated by love, and love alone.

In this modern world we get so tied up with what this politician/corporation/celebrity has done or not done, that we occupy our minds in ways that don’t always benefit us.  Who is to know whether ‘whatever the drama of the moment is’ hasn’t been staged – just to keep us distracted and in emotion and therefore cut off from our intuition and guidance, and also rational thought!  If we tapped into our inner being, our own intuition, and took our guidance from that – then what others did or didn’t do would no longer be relevant or important. We would cease to be influenced or affected by the opinions of others, and our intuition would guide us into right action. Nobody can take away our power unless we allow them to.

I truly believe that if we utilised this immense power within us the world would have to change – we would no longer give time nor credence to those who don’t have our best interests at heart – to those who utilise fear as a weapon – to those who are self-serving. After all, they are only in power because they have hijacked the power of others through various forms of manipulation and propaganda. If we train and nurture our own intuition, then their energy would repel us – we wouldn’t be taken in by their empty promises and downright lies. The Emperor would indeed have no clothes!

So, whatever our situation in life, I believe that it would be of benefit to us all to become more mindful of the steps we take moving forward, rather than just repeating the same steps we took yesterday and the day before. If we make small choices in our everyday lives, the ones we truly have control over, then one day we will look back and be shocked at how far we’ve come, and how much our world has changed because of our actions.

Wishing you love in your life, light on your path and the power of true choice!
