The Life that you Seek … and the Company you Keep

Rasheed-Ogunlaru“Achieving the life that you seek is often determined by the company that you keep” says leading life coach and motivational speaker – Rasheed Ogunlaru

Are you being held back in life by some of the people who are closest to you? Your friends, family, colleagues and partner may be your greatest supporters, but sometimes they may stifle you. In order to move forward in life you will have to build positive relationships and let go of negative ones.

You are the driver: You are the one constant in your life. Everyone else may come and go. So it is important that your hand is on the steering wheel and that you don’t become a passenger. Choose your passengers very carefully to avoid damage to yourself, your luggage, your car and others on the road.

Family Ties: A family should have a strong bond but should not tie you down. You may have a tight-knit family or may have had no family or support. Whatever has happened in the past, love, understanding and knowing the space that you and others’ need will be the key to everyone moving forward from here on.

Find out who your friends are: They say that in a crisis a friend is one who walks in when everyone else walks out. A friend is supportive of you and does not put you down. How do your friends measure up to this? Is it time to let some of them go?

New blood: I’ve a saying: “you cannot pour more water into a full cup”. You may be at a point in your life where you’re desperate for new opportunities, strong friendships, a loving relationship or career change. These things can only emerge in your life if you make room for them. The old furniture may be blocking the space for the new. This will take courage. Sometimes you’ll need to put out the old furniture before the new things arrive.

Punch above your weight: I remember watching an interview with the singer Bjork. She said she only works with artists who are as good as her or better. Through this she achieves her best and extends her possibilities. The same is true for you. Seek those who can open out your mind, opportunities and success. This is an exchange; your passion and potential and their experience and knowledge. Too often we punch below our weight.

The winning team: In sport and business, behind every success is a team. It’s important to have the right blend of skills, experience, talents and temperaments for the task. It is the same in your life. What is it that you’re looking to achieve and do you have the right team? If not, what would that team consist of and how can you find them and get them on board?

You need to get out more: Maybe you’ve been hiding your light under a bushel. Perhaps you’ve put career, hobbies or relationships on hold. What environments do you need to nourish you? You may need to join groups, clubs, associations or organisations that feel right for you. Go for it – it is time for you to step into the world
