Living My Dream

Julia ChiAll my life I have wanted to run and write, preferably in the sun…
I was born in West Africa and the first few years of my life were spent running free, mainly naked…

We returned to England when I was four years old, and in effect it has taken me fifty years to return to the free, sunny nakedness of my first years…

Twelve years ago, I took a sabbatical and spent some of it writing my first book – and running a lot – in Spain…

‘This is how I would like to live’ I thought; and I said it too, to various friends….
I returned from Spain and moved to the coast in the UK … The area I lived is known as ‘The Sunshine Coast’…

I loved it there, I felt as if I was on holiday all the time… Even though it wasn’t always sunny!

I travelled abroad quite often and wrote articles about my travels and the races I ran in… I was one running magazine’s ‘roving race reporter’ for a year or two….

I was, in retrospect, taking steps towards my dream life…

Freedom, living and writing and running in the sun…
I didn’t own a property, preferring to rent as it meant I felt I could ‘go’ whenever and wherever I might want go…
Which deep down I felt one day I would do…

And so now I live this way, mainly in the sun, running and writing and even better I share it with Anadi, my husband…

We are of the same orientation…. Self awareness and clearing everything that attaches us to fear, and to our ego, our practice…
And trusting that our soul knows the way from this place…!

That our yearnings are true ones and will make a difference from the inside out, from living the change,

Ghandi said, ‘If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. … We need not wait to see what others do.”

I have embraced this philosophy since I was young… My father encouraged us to always be aware of the whole, ‘for the good of the common wealth’, he would regularly say… ‘Make sure your actions are for the good of everyone…’

And I have discovered that if we clear the darkness from within us, heal our own hurt, then we discover we are one; and when we heal ourselves we cannot hurt ourselves, and so we cannot hurt others…

And so all of our actions become positive and powerful for the world….

I have been running all of my life – it feels I was born to run. In the running step I experienced freedom and my true expression. I came to see that I needed to ‘get out of the way of myself’ and let my energy flow through the running step; allow it to express itself in the dance and the motion of running.  I ran for England and GB for some years. My first international was in 1979, a three mile cross country race; and I continued to run at international level until 1993. Two of my best results were first place in the Dublin City Marathon in 1985 and 7th place woman, 3rd British woman in the 1986 London Marathon in a time of 2.36.31, which gained me selection for the Commonwealth Games.
