What’s the gorilla? Thoughtful? Sad? Watchful? Or just sleepy?
We all had those students who “defied the odds” against their labels and we see it all the time on social media and the news. Recent case in point: Greta Thunberg.
I challenge you to recognize the labels that you’ve placed on yourself and others.
Go ahead, take a moment. Reflect on how you identify yourself. I’m going to join you.
All labels imply judgment. And if we are working toward a “We Are All One” society, then abandoning judgment will be our make-or-break moment.
I’m also going to suggest that we are all of the labels, some of the time. (I’ll even offer I’ve been Democratic and Republican!)
We can even be opposing labels at the same time: Caring and aloof, compassionate and detached, shy and talkative, lazy and motivated…
It’s when we place judgment upon these labels that we feel the negative spiral around them.
“I’m empathetic. He’s the black sheep. She’s shy. They’re pushy,” all smack of judgment.
All labels suit us some of the time. And they all have a purpose in getting things done or waking us up.
So my request is: just BE!
Be quiet or inquisitive or introspective or emotional or detached! It doesn’t matter as long as it’s authentic.
Please, don’t judge others or yourself for how you are feeling, and more importantly, don’t label our children.
Here’s to moving humanity forward…join me!
