Equalia – Long Lost, Future Goddess
A friend recently commented on my book ‘Deep Equality’. She said that it was really inspiring around spirituality and progressive politics, but there was no ‘being’ to worship. Well, I’m not exactly a worshipping kind of person, hierarchies aren’t my thing. But I did think a lot about it. I have to admit that most human cultures seem to have personified principles and forces of nature. Even the very abstract and formless idea of the Tao balancing opposites in ancient China has been expressed as form in Yin and Yang symbols. There are also loads of goddesses and gods, shrines and rituals in the actual practice of Taoism.
So I kind of asked for someone to appear. And one hot summer’s evening in 2013, while meditating, she arrived. I’ve never been one for visions so it was more like just the sound of her name…..Equa lia. Wow! The word felt so perfect that it gave me shivers all over. Some might say that I was channelling her. Who knows? After thanking her for appearing, I did the next inevitable thing in this era of the internet. I Googled her. To my disappointment she wasn’t in any list of ancient goddesses. But I did eventually find her in a surprising context. She turned up in one of my favourite TV shows, the Simpsons. Equalia was the name given to a fantasy island that Lisa and her friend Juliette had conjured up. In this place all the citizens were equal but Lisa and Juliette were in charge!!
Since then I have been honouring her, not quite the same as worshipping! I brought her to public attention at a Summer Solstice ritual I facilitated for the Pagan Federation in 2014. When visualising her I see a double helix of golden light or spirals and serpents winding in and out of each other. She can also be a playful woman dancing in and out of many dimensions, young and old, black and white, laughing and crying, earthed and unseen in air, flowing like water and within the ever living flame.
Equalia is a long lost future goddess, waiting in the wings for the game to end.
She is a force of nature mindlessly balancing all she sees and does not see.
She is nowhere and everywhere, utopian and mundane, spirit in matter when everything and nothing matters.
She is the silent scream of the rebel’s rage, the toddler’s stamp, the mother’s love and the lover’s longing.
She is the dialectic process between opposites but with no synthesis, no end and no beginning, no solution, no problem.
She is the eternal dance, forever returning and going away, expanding and contracting, joyful and sorrowful.
Her rites are human rights. Her rituals are the protest marches against injustice, inequality, capitalism, consumerism, racism, patriarchy, homophobia, poverty and much, much more.
Her temples are everywhere, in our bodies, in our homes, in the forests, on the beaches, on city streets as well as up sacred mountains.
She is in the equalising breath we breathe, balancing all opposites within and without, keeping us healthy in body and mind. Her knowing of deep interpersonal equality, not sameness, leads us more and more towards social, economic and political equity in the world. Equalia is a powerful counter to the present increase in inequality and materialism. She is the flow of equalising rhythms dissolving all hierarchies.
