At this time of year it’s normal to think about what you want to achieve in the year to come. We tend to focus on setting goals that result in a tangible result such as getting a new job, starting or growing a business, finding your soul mate, getting fitter or slimmer etc, etc.
Have you stopped to consider what you want to BE in this transformational year of 2016? Why not work on BEing an empowered creator, able to manifest your dreams and desires?
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a common question we ask of children, and the reply is always job related… “I want to be a fireman/policeman/train driver…”.
It may be a cliché but it’s worth remembering that we are human beings, not human doings. We are spiritual beings having a physical experience, not the other way round. We are on the cusp of the greatest cosmic changes humanity and Earth has ever experienced, so are you going to claim your power as a creator and live true to yourself?
To be an empowered creator we need to leave ego behind, put our higher self in charge and align with our purpose.
We have been conditioned to place doing above being, with spiritual activities being relegated to a very small proportion of our time. By neglecting our spirit we are being distracted from our true purpose and remaining ignorant of how powerful we really are. Normal life has become so rushed with working to make ends meet (in some cases requiring two jobs), home and family responsibilities and socializing that spiritual activities are often neglected.
This is the opposite of what we are here to experience on this planet as human beings. First and foremost our purpose here is to grow in consciousness which will activate our powers of positive manifestation. I say positive manifestation, because our thoughts and words are manifesting continuously. It is only when we become conscious of the power of thoughts and words and learn to control what we allow into our consciousness that we can produce consistently positive results – what we want rather than what we don’t want.
Over the last few years I’ve felt increasingly drawn to focusing on BE-ing first and DO-ing second. This has also been a common theme among others actively working on their conscious evolution and involved in delivering messages about our ascension to a higher dimension.
The planet and all its inhabitants are going through this process of ascension and it involves releasing all our false beliefs, and dealing with negativity, egoic issues and karma by bringing them to the surface for healing so we can step fully into our role as empowered creators.
We are discovering the truth about who we really are.
This doesn’t mean we abandon everything we do and meditate all day long. What it means is that we assess everything we do against the barometer of the heart, and take inspired action that is congruent with our purpose.
How to get back in touch with your true self
The challenge is that we have so many layers of conditioning that it can be difficult to distinguish between what you feel is right and what you think you SHOULD do. Empowered creation requires doing things in response to intuition and the inner voice that gives us inspired ideas. Conditioning and fear blocks out that inner voice and makes us react rather than respond to situations so we don’t manifest the outcome we want.
We are also programmed into thinking of success in physical 3-D terms of career, money, possessions and tangible results, so that it is easy to keep getting dragged back into those false measures of self-worth and to feel like a failure if we don’t measure up to them. Yet you are actually here with a higher purpose that involves service to humanity and the planet (on a large or a small scale), and the rewards come as a result of fulfilling your purpose, not as the be all and end all.
Do you really know yourself? Do you know what your purpose is?
The distractions of daily life get in the way of diving deep within to understand who we really are and what we are here to do. As a spiritual being we have lived many lives, each with a different personality matched to a specific purpose. So, if we approach self-knowledge on both a practical and a spiritual level, we can gain insights into who we are and what we’re here to do this time around.
On a practical level, I take my clients through a variety of personality profiling tests and work through a process to help them discover their life purpose, which I’ll cover in a later article. The personality tests have consistently delivered ‘aha’ moments to my clients as suddenly they understand the meaning and context of their life experiences.
You can start by trying them out yourself, if you haven’t already tried this avenue of self-discovery. The ones I typically use are MBTI (Jungian/Myers Briggs) and Enneagram which are free, although you can take a more in-depth Enneagram test. The free MBTI test can be taken at Personality Page and the Enneagram test is available at The Enneagram Institute. Another link to a free test.
I also recommend Roger Hamilton’s Wealth Dynamics test*, especially for entrepreneurs, as it assesses your personality in terms of business roles, the idea being that to create a successful business you need to build a team with the range of personalities that cover all aspects of business operation.
Of these three tests, the Enneagram has a very strong emphasis on spiritual development, and to add to the spiritual aspects of self-discovery I recommend Dan Millman’s Life Purpose System, detailed in his book THE LIFE YOU WERE BORN TO LIVE: A Guide to Finding Your Life Purpose*.
This uses Pythagorean numerology based on your date of birth to determine your soul purpose – i.e. the spiritual challenges you are here to face in order to achieve the soul growth you have committed to in this lifetime. Every client I have used this with has said the profile is like looking in the mirror. Dan’s book is available as a paperback or Kindle edition and there is also an app available on i-phones and Android phones which doesn’t have the complete detail of the book but it automatically calculates your life purpose numbers and gives you a pretty thorough explanation of what that means and how to use it.
If you decide to take the tests, you’ll find it very interesting to see the consistency across the different profiling methods, and you will get invaluable insights into your personality traits and preferences. When I work through the interpretation of the results with my clients they develop a deep understanding of themselves and make huge steps forward into self-acceptance and ultimately self-love which empowers them to confidently fulfill their purpose.
Panache Desai who presented at our Festival of Enlightenment in 2011 introduced his keynote speech with the statement that “You don’t need anyone to achieve enlightenment, you have everything you need already”. He also defined the term Guru, spelling out the letters G-U-R-U which, he explained, stand for “Gee You Are You”; in other words you don’t need a guru, the answers are inside yourself.
We second that. If you adopt a guru you are in effect saying someone else, another human being, knows all the answers.
We don’t promote gurus or even a single spiritual teacher or philosophy, although it can be very helpful to have a coach or mentor help you through the process of self-discovery, to give a different perspective and help you discover your purpose. We encourage you to look inside yourself for the answers and to seek out whatever teachings resonate with you. Even if you really love a particular writer or teacher, there may still be some messages that you don’t agree with because of your own intuition or experiences. In that case, take away the messages that feel right and trust your own intuition and experience.
Finding time to spend quietly connecting to your higher self is essential for hearing your inner voice, connecting to God and your spirit guides. Even if it is only a few minutes a day it helps to develop the ability to quieten your mind so you can hear the guidance that is available to you. Meditation has been proven to have multiple benefits on spiritual, physical and emotional levels and like anything worth doing it takes practice and commitment.
To begin with it helps to have something to occupy your mind as you train it to enter the alpha-theta brain waves of the meditative state. There is a wealth of relaxing music for meditation and you can also get recordings of guided meditations on Amazon, i-tunes, YouTube and even apps for your phone or tablet. I prefer to use headphones as it also blocks out distracting noises. Create the atmosphere for meditation by going somewhere quiet and ask others not to interrupt you. Light candles and incense to create a soothing environment.
Connect Body, Mind & Spirit
Although I’m only just beginning my exploration into yoga, it is one of the few forms of exercise that involves body, mind and spirit. Just as with meditation you can start with a few minutes a day and work up from there, starting with easy beginner poses and progressively develop your fitness, flexibility and harmony. There are different flavors of yoga too. Some are more spiritually oriented than others. You can find a comprehensive list of the different types of yoga at MatsMatsMats.com and the benefits of yoga at The Art of Living.
You’ll find lots of free yoga videos on YouTube. Joining a yoga class has the additional benefit of meeting up with like-minded spiritually oriented people and making new friends as well as getting help and instruction in the poses.
BE-ing in every day life
If we’re to co-create a new world of love, joy, peace and abundance, we must bring spirituality into every day life. As I said in my recent article Wish it could be Christmas every day?, “it is only when we bring spirit into every moment that we become who we truly are and step into our creative power as spiritual beings”.
The more you practice meditation and become self-aware, the easier it will become to maintain a calm, conscious approach to every day life. The more you make conscious choices focused on your desired outcome, the happier you will be. The more you surround yourself with people who share your philosophy and beliefs about the Universe, the easier it is to stay in alignment with your purpose. All these contribute to raising your vibrational frequency and developing your ability to be an empowered creator.
So practice checking everything against that inner barometer – your heart. As you are going about your daily life, ask yourself:
- Does this feel right?
- Am I doing the right thing?
- How am I responding to this situation?
- What emotions are coming up?
- What is the meaning behind this situation?
- How do I feel about this person?
- What outcome do I want to create in this situation?
- Are my words and thoughts creating the outcome I want?
Remember, you are a powerful creator and it is your thoughts and words that are the agents of manifestation. Be responsible about what you allow into your consciousness so you manifest positive results.
Lighten Up – Have Fun
We are taught by the Powers That Be that adults should take life seriously and be ‘responsible’ because that supports their agenda of enslavement, but that creates a heavy burden for us, is the opposite of what life is really about and takes away life’s joy.
Instead, what we DO should be a reflection of our soul purpose and bring us joy; we’re not here to do a job we hate just to pay the bills. Living in Love, Joy, Peace and Abundance means we love what we do, it brings us joy, we are at peace with ourselves because we’re fulfilling our purpose and we create abundance as a natural reward for the heartfelt service we provide. We do things enthusiastically (enthusiasm – from enthous ‘possessed by a god, inspired’ based on theos ‘god’) and with love so the quality of our results is exponentially higher.
So as well as being passionate about your life’s work, take time out to have fun doing something you love and pamper yourself in whatever way appeals to you. When you nurture yourself you increase your ability to be of service to others and the planet.
Lighten up means just that! Allow the light into your life which will raise your vibrational frequency to a level that activates your positive creative powers. If you don’t already know your purpose, discover it. Then do whatever it takes to align with that purpose and become a master manifester. Not only will you bring great benefit to yourself and those close to you, you’ll be contributing to raising the collective vibration of humanity and the planet and making 2016 a truly transformational year by helping us all to create “a smiling world”.
