Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
Or tapping as it is sometimes known.
This is something that anyone can do, anywhere, at any time. Although it may look a little odd in public, those in the know will understand. It is a technique that is set to take the world by storm and in so doing will help to speed up the transformation. You can pay a lot of money to study this with someone, but I like to share the things that have worked for me with others freely and it really is very simple, if you know what you are doing.
It is based on the work of Gary Craig, who also shared it for free, and works on the discovery that:
“The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.”
As this process is so effective I suggest that you create a record sheet to show your progress. I suggest that you make a list of things that you would like to deal with and an estimation of how troublesome they are out of ten, with ten being the most problematic. Keeping track of them will help you to see how the problems start to diminish whether you believe in EFT or not.
Write the issues down the left-hand side and divide the paper vertically into 5 or 6 columns writing “starting level” at the top of the first column
Number the other columns 1, 2, 3 and so on. As you work on the issues over time you will then have a clear record of your progress, without the need to keep the result in mind.
Setting up the system
While repeating one of the affirmations below continuously rub the sore spot. There are 2 possible sore spots and it doesn’t matter which one you use. One is the karate chop point on either hand and the other is in the upper chest. To locate the one on the upper chest find the “U” shaped notch at the top of your breastbone, go down 3 inches towards your navel, then across 3 inches either left or right and press vigorously within a 2 inch radius. You should find a sore spot there.
This is the basic recipe:
The set up…. Repeat this affirmation 3 times:
“Even though I have this………..,I deeply and completely accept myself.”
Eg: “Even though I have this anger towards my father/mother, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“Even though I have this stiffness in my neck, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“Even though I have this craving for alcohol, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“Even though I have this depression, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“Even though I have this headache, I deeply and completely accept myself.” And so on.
Tap about 7 times on each of the following energy points whilst repeating the reminder phrase. This will be something like “This depression”, “This anger towards my mother”, “This stiffness in my neck”. It doesn’t matter which hand you use but it is usually better to use your dominant one. Tap with the fingertips of your index finger and middle finger as this covers a slightly larger area than only one fingertip.
The points are abbreviated as follows:
EB = Inner edge of the eyebrow
SE = side of the eye, on the outer edge
UE = under the eye, about an inch below the pupil
UN = under the nose
Ch = chin, halfway between the lower lip and the point of the chin
CB = collar bone which is located by finding the “U” shaped bone at your neck again and dropping down 1 inch then going right or left 1 inch
UA = under arm (armpit)
TOH = Top of head
Then repeat the basic sequence of tapping above only this time add in some positive statements based on the theme you have been working on.
Let’s say you were using the reminder phrase “this depression” so on the repeat run through you can ad lib adding in phrases such as: · “I am starting to feel so much lighter.” ·
“Life is an adventure.” ·
“I am one of its heroes/heroines.” ·
“I can choose.” ·
“I choose a joyful life.” And so on.
I am sure that you will be able to come up with your own phrases, ensuring that they are all positive, for example it would be counter-productive to say something like: “I don’t feel so heavily laden now”. So have fun and see what positive ideas you can add to your tapping. When you have completed the process, assess how you feel afterwards and record it, as session 1, on the Record sheet that you made before you started out. You are aiming to get the number down to as close to zero as possible. This may require several runs of the sequence, though it has been known to completely transform a situation in just one run through.
When you repeat the sequence to bring the number down lower you will use the phrase “The remainder of this depression…”
As this process doesn’t require you to believe in it, as it works on the body’s meridians independent of your belief systems, I suggest that you try this out on a variety of issues, both physical and emotional, and, using the record sheet, see for yourself that it does work!
