Astrology – Why Have a Reading?

Siobhan PurcellI would like to tell you a little about my life to illustrate some of the workings of astrology.

Although interested in astrology for some time, it wasn’t until 2009 after an emotional awakening that I decided to have a reading.

In April of that year, my life disintegrated before my eyes as a veil of deception was lifted. My husband had been living a double life for most of our marriage. Although it was a deeply painful period of my life, it was an important time and necessary for my soul’s evolution and personal growth as a human.

The astrology reading confirmed that an emotional awakening would occur at that time. My astrologer described it as: “The poignant end of a love story and there are potential health issues related to the nervous system and emotional stress.”

What I remember as most interesting from his reading was the planet Venus conjunct Neptune in Scorpio close to my ascendant. Some key words for Neptune are illusion, deception, confusion, intuition, compassion and creativity. Venus as you know is the planet of love and beauty, including a love of culture and art. There is much I could say about this conjunction and its relationship to the rest of my chart, but for the purpose of this blog I am sharing only part of it with you.

Venus conjunct Neptune in Scorpio in the 12th house shows a tendency to be deceived by others, to attract illusionists and to delude myself that my personal relationship is better than it actually is. There is a tendency to be self-sacrificial putting the other person’s needs before my own and to allow others to step over my boundaries.

Neptune in this position means that throughout my life, I am tested repeatedly. This can take the form of people trying to manipulate me, either consciously or unconsciously. It can happen subtly or, more obviously. The other polarity of this conjunction shows that I am deeply loyal to my partner and attract caring, compassionate and sensitive people. And, unsurprisingly, some have Neptune close to their ascendant.

Can the negative pattern be changed? Yes of course. The reading helped me understand myself on a deeper level because the planets’ placements are reflective of the soul’s journey, what it is learning and experiencing and it reaches into the far past as well. Through understanding just this small part of my chart, I began a process of deep inner change. My levels of perception and my intuition are far beyond what they once were and continue to grow.

The astrology chart is fascinating in that it demonstrates our multi-faceted parts. For example, I have a strong Sagittarian sun. Key words are free spirit, independent, intuitive, the teacher, the truth seeker and traveller. Sagittarians generally shy away from commitment and dislike feeling harnessed or controlled in any way. It is interesting therefore that I got married at all and that I wasn’t able to see the truth of my situation and break free before 2009. Neptune – illusion, self-deception. The Neptune/Venus aspect showed another energy within me that needed attention and the marriage experience and awakening were a necessary part of that.

Understandably people reach out for support during a time of crisis. They want, as I did, to make sense of what is happening and to find hope for the future. Many people have tarot or psychic readings and they receive comfort from them.

However, an astrological reading is an entirely different process and provides you with tools to change your life. Knowledge is power. It gives deep analysis of your soul’s journey into this lifetime and where you are currently in that journey. For some people, it can feel as if they are connecting with their inner core and really understanding themselves and the life they have lived for the first time. It can be so enlightening as it was for me.

You don’t have to wait for a crisis to have a reading, just the motivation to learn who you really are and to start living your life with consciousness. What could be better?
