Today’s Kids: Anti-Psychotics, Medicating Behaviour and Social Issues

posted in: Nutrition 0

I was just having this conversation online, and decided it was a good topic to address in an actual Post.  I was responding to a book, that looks at how our society and doctors and schools are using heavy drugs, like anti-psychotics on our CHILDREN!

This bothered me on SO MANY levels! Why is our system continually throwing quick BAD solutions at complex problems?

There are so many contributing factors to our kids behaviour!  It SUCKS that educators and doctors just want to drug them, and doctors are profiting from it as well!

Also- what about the very simple fact that.. they are SUPPOSED to have a lot of energy… they’re KIDS!!!

But seriously- behaviour is a very complex situation and a pill to fix things is only teaching our kids quick-fix solutions.. It’s no wonder our kids are more likely to use recreational drugs and misuse prescription drugs… we are conditioning them from infancy, from what we give them, and what they see adults doing/ taking.. that we need to change how we feel chemically- and never address big picture issues. why look at your life? your diet? your environment? We can just take pills and forget about it all…. I look forward, with dread, to reading this book… as an educator, and holistic youth coach.. we are in a crisis of epic proportions.

I remember my own nephews, about 5 or 6 at the time, running up to Mommy, hand out for “headache medicine”…. as though it were candy.  And to them, it IS candy.  it is brightly coloured and flavoured and sweetened.  and they have grown up, right in the mainstream mentality, to quickly grab a pill for whatever ails them- just like the millions of other kids- just like them!   It would never occur to them, to try drinking some water, or stretching neck muscles FIRST… to try to relieve the headache.

But as far as the bigger picture is concerned, our educators and doctors do not even blink when children are on behaviour modifying medications!  To them it is “normal.”  This could be, because they as adults use medications so readily that they are blind to it, as not-normal! and then they scratch their heads in their FUTILE attempt to combat the rampant epidemic drug problems that children are engaged in: street drugs and prescription abuse.  duh! You’ve trained them well, and now you have what you wished for!

Behaviour is a very complex thing.  it is part genetic, part biology, part environment and part conditioning.  Holistic experts who look at disease and disorders understand the huge link between diet and behaviour.  Most people don’t know that there is a direct link from the GUT, where our food is being digested, to the BRAIN:  the vagus nerve.  SO– body-distress = brain distress.  And there are aspects of brain and body that do not differentiate between physical and mental.  It is only mainstream medicine that severs these two aspects of our health.

I used to know a guy who was director(?) of a clinic near Philly. one day he puts a video into the VCR and all he said was, you might find this interesting, and then left the room. So I had no clear idea what to expect. I knew he worked in/ managed/? a clinic that tested kids for food based, “brain allergies”… anyway.. video was most likely live footage of kids in their final testing re allergens.. first kid, probably around 10(?) guessing here. Someone off camera is talking to him.. he seems totally normal, regular conversation. I was a little bit.. huh, what am I looking for/ at…

And then someone comes in and gives him a tiny sub-cutaneous ( just under surface of the skin)… injection of… something you’d never suspect or believe.. I think it was potato or banana… anyway- in LESS THAN TEN SECONDS… they had to have 3-4 people PHYSICALLY restrain this kid!!! HE had instantly converted into every teacher and parents worst imaginable nightmare. he was kicking, clawing, scratching, biting and attacking. And he said- if I had a knife I would kill you, I’d kill myself. WHOA!!!! Anyway- this was just the first kid…

I watched a full range of kids, with a wide range of reactions to a whole slew of possible offending foods. No two kids had identical reactions and no two kids had the same allergies. Some kids– had “allergic reactions” with certain combinations of foods. But i watched EVERY worst behaviour.. the 5 percent of kids in the classroom that make teaching a struggle… giddiness, ADHD, moodiness, sadness, fatigue, despondency. one kid, crawled under a table and withdrew. We KNOW there is a powerful connection between diet and behaviour!

So why aren’t we looking at this? Well, because there’s no MONEY in it! PLUS- this would necessitate taking responsibility for ourselves, our diet and nutrition, and.. more importantly.. our life-style that shoves unhealthy processed foods and chemicals into sensitive developing brains and bodies…. There ARE solutions.. but it is imperative that we WAKE UP.. and STOP trusting our medical doctors.. who are NOT nutritionists, who are NOT trained to look at, or educate to the CONCEPT of causative factors. Our children were not BORN BAD… it is up to US.. to keep them healthy, and safe.. and chemical-free!
