How Do You Talk To God?

Teri DluznieskiHow to communicate with God?  Well, that’s a good refresher question.  One thing I really like about the linked in discussions, is that it tends to bring my focus back to some fundamental concepts: either reminders or refreshers or new perspectives:)

Having studied with the indigenous teachers- mostly Peru- my teachers were somewhat non-denominational.  Granted, the majority of the Peruvians are Christian/Catholic, so it isn’t that they are outside of the language of Western Religion.  In fact, they have a very interesting blend of the two ideologies, without any difficulty reconciling differences.  That is how all-encompassing their belief system, their world-view is.  I imagine it is fairly similar to what the Irish experienced way back, assimilating Christianity with their own Earth-based practices.  In fact, the cross was originally a Celtic icon, rather than Christian; early Christianity had the symbol of the fish.

Anyway- back to the question.  I prefaced the question with this information, because in the Andean teachings the question was framed a little differently.  They think of it as having a dialogue with the invisible world.  Imagine you were trying to have a conversation with someone who did not speak English.  How do you convey your meaning, your intent?  Take that one step further:  how do you have a dialogue with someone who does not use human language?

Initially I was taught through the specific practice of Sand Painting work.  Sand Painting work acts as the windows interface between the seen and unseen.  the unseen can be God, Nature, Angels, Guides, Devas.. select the term that best fits with the individual belief system.  Ultimately, the invisible realms love and support this world and are always there, patiently waiting for us to connect with them.

So, how to open that dialogue.  Begin by finding a space to work with.  Create Sacred Space by saying prayers and setting the intent.  Ask for support, call in the support from the invisible realm.  From there, set up your space. Delineate and mark the area you are going to work in/ with.

From there, you begin your dialogue.  Choose items you find, preferably in Nature.  Ideally items you have found in that very area. You may find something unique, such as a feather, or shell, nuts, seeds, leaves, berries.  or something that doesn’t necessarily belong in that location.  That item could be symbolic, or there for a reason.  For you.

Start by selecting one that represents yourself.  Hold it closely in your hands.  Feel yourself.  Blow your breath into the item.  This imbues the item with a sort of Quantum Entanglement.  You are telling the universe that that item, that stick, stone or object is YOU, for this interaction.

What emotions are you feeling, what are you bringing TO this conversation.  Instill that into the object. Maybe you are uncertain about something.  Bring that uncertainty, that desire for clarity, into the work.  Blow your intention, your request, your prayer, into the object.

From there, begin a dialogue.  What other things or people need to be represented? Family? a job? goals?  With each item, use your breath to put the intent of what each one represents into the object.  In that way, it stops being a stone, for this ceremony, and becomes a parent or child or co-worker, a hope, a fear or obstacle.

Don’t try to over-think it.  Just open yourself to the experience.  This is the place where you can pour out your truest deepest concerns.  There is no judgement, no retribution, no “gotcha’s” or guilt.  This is the true beauty of working with the invisible realms.  Those emotions and responses, are human.  If those come up, put them into the stone or stick and place them into the circle.

This is a very organic experience.  No two are alike, and trying to guide it or force it doesn’t always help.  Nor does it often work.  Listen to the responses that come up while you are working.  They might be the other side of your dialogue.  They might be something through Nature.

When you are done, step back and observe the sand painting. I often bring a sketch pad and make a simple drawing.  This allows me to sharpen my focus and my awareness.  I often see things I didn’t see in the process.  It helps to make connections.

You may get your insight in the moment.  if not, don’t worry.  Most of the time it is best when you treat the experience like making bread, or wine.  It needs a little time to set and process, to cook.  Give it several hours, the day, or sometimes it is best to sleep on it and let it do its thing overnight.

Come back to your space fresh.  First off, has anything changed? Very often, an item will have been moved, or removed.  Maybe some small ( and sometimes not so small:) creatures have been visiting.  These are often the courier for the invisible beings.   Note the locations of things.  Mostly, bring your own awareness to the experience.  The information is there, likely the answer is there as well.

I have done sand painting work before, with very little clarity, and sometimes without a clear sense of what was wrong, or out of balance.  When I come back and see what I have constructed, the sand painting is a map or landscape- showing me aspects of my circumstances that I hadn’t noticed.

Once, several yeas ago, I had a “friend,” and things were very out of balance.  I now have much better insights that I have gained over time.  But in that period, I could never understood why I seemed to work at this friendship, but it never really felt solid and reliable.  When I set up the Sand painting, I didn’t have any conscious intent.  when I was done, I noticed that all of my things, all of my energy, was around this other person.  None of my energy was near ME. the painting, or prayer, showed me, clearly and physically just how much energy I was investing in something, and how drained I was leaving myself.  I really hadn’t seen this, until I SAW it.  Ultimately, this person was NOT a friend, but rather someone who was opportunistic.  That was the message/ information the universe needed me to see/ to get.

From there, I realised I needed to re-center myself.  I did this initially by moving all of those gifts of mine.. my resources, my energy, etc.. around ME.  I then re-enforced what I saw to be a natural line or rift, between the two of us.  I set the intention of this is MY SIDE.  I began to think of my resources like sheep, and I didn’t want them straying outside of safe pastures.

I decided to let this “jello” set for a while longer, to make sure both I and the universe shifted this pattern.  I went back later,, thanking each item, and thanked the universe for bringing clarity to my situation.  I then picked up each object, in turn, choosing to remove “friend” first, and then working my way through all my other gifts and aspects.  I thanked each one, and “released” it from its work.

That is the other part about creating prayers.  We need to be prepared to accept the answer we receive. the universe, God, or angels, HEAR our prayer.  This is both what we say, and what we convey about what we need and what will best serve us to move forward.   In this instance, I had hoped to create a better friendship- to have a balance restored.  Ultimately, it was a lesson to me about respecting boundaries.  It wasn’t too far down the line that the issue was “forced,” and I walked away from someone who had never really been my friend. I was a little sad, and it did hurt.  But not for very long, and less than it might have. In looking back, I Know my life is better served without a friend who has no integrity.

Anyway- in terms of how one talks to God.  This is an excellent primer.  As this sort of skill is practiced and honed, those dialogues can be much more impromptu.  When we learn what our own individual markers are, what the landscape is, like dreams… talking to and with God, becomes a sort of ongoing dialogue. That is the truly neat thing about the universe… it is always THERE!

I am an Education Specialist, Health Coach and Author. I work with aspects of the teachings I have learned from Andean shamanic and cosmology, to health, nutrition and education.  Everything is energy. Energy must flow. Like water, when it does not flow, it stagnates and is not healthy. These techniques help your life to flow. I have been initiated into many of the ancient lineages and learned ceremonies, rites of passage and healing techniques.  I have worked as a healer and done workshops and taught some of these aspects – passing the teachings on.
